Maharashtra Drought: Election Commission Relaxes MCC to Allow Govt to Extend Relief Measures

As the Lok Sabha elections had concluded in Maharashtra, the Election Commission (EC) on Monday allowed the state government to carry out drought relief work by giving relaxation in the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) on the request of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Mumbai, May 6: As the Lok Sabha elections had concluded in Maharashtra, the Election Commission (EC) on Monday allowed the state government to carry out drought relief work by giving relaxation in the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on April 30 had written a letter Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) seeking relaxation in the MCC for carrying out drought relief measures.

Fadnavis had written, “Total 151 talukas of Maharashtra have been declared drought-hit and Centre has passed a budget of Rs 4714 crore for drought relief in the state.” He had also cited an incident of 2009 when relaxation in the MCC was granted by the Election Commission. Last year, the state government declared droughts in 180 tehsils which were facing water scarcity due to deficient rainfall in the monsoon season. Meanwhile, the parliamentary polls in Maharashtra concluded on April 29. The elections were conducted in four phases on 48 Lok Sabha seats on April 11, 18, 23 and 29. The counting of votes will take place with the conclusion of the seventh phase of Lok Sabha elections.
