Mumbai, December 14: A Right To Information (RTI) has revealed that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' two vehicles jumped the speed barrier and thus violated traffic norms thirteen times between January 12, 2018, and August 12, 2018. Accordingly, a fine of 13,000 was slapped on Maharashtra CM. However, the traffic police department had revoked all his e-challan, according to India today report. A statement issued by traffic police said that the CM's convoy was exempted from speeding rules due to security protocols. The RTI was filed by Shakeel Ahmed, a right-to-information activist. The registration number of CM's two vehicles are MH01 CP 0037 and MH01 CP 0038, which violated traffic rules at Bandra Worli Sea link 13 times this year. The fine for over speeding is Rs 1,000. “Traffic challans are auto-generated through deployed speed cameras. Convoy vehicles of the CM are exempted from speed limits due to security threat perception,” the Mumbai Traffic Police said in a statement. It added that there are “technical glitches” in the software which generates e-challans and it is being rectified. But according to Ahmed only ambulances, fire engines and police vehicles are exempted during emergency situations.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra government in November had passed an order to suspend the driving license for three months if a person jumps the red signal or talks on the mobile phone while driving. The action was taken after the number of deaths in road accidents was dramatically increased from the last year.
