Mumbai, September 23: With just weeks remaining for the Assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Election Commission of India on Monday appointed two ex-Indian Revenue Service officers -- Madhu Mahajan (ex IRS 1982) and B Murali Kumar (ex IRS 1983) as Special Expenditure Observers. Reports stated that these two IRS officers would take charge of the election process in Maharashtra.

Earlier in the day, the ECI organised a Briefing for observers to be deployed for elections to be held next month for the Haryana and Maharashtra Legislative Assemblies. In the briefing, around 500 officers drawn from IAS, IPS officers as also from Indian Revenue Service and few other Central Services attended. During the briefing, ECI Sunil Arora appointed two Special Expenditure Observers for Maharashtra. The ECi chose Madhu Mahajan -- ex IRS 1982 -- who had performed exceptionally well in Special Expenditure Observer for Tamil Nadu in recent Lok Sabha elections. Apart from this, the ECI appointed B Murali Kumar -- ex IRS 1983 -- was also appointed Special Expenditure Observer for 8-Vellore Parliamentary Constituency during Lok Sabha Elections.

ECI Chairman Sunil Arora emphasised that the observers should ensure strict compliance of ECI's rules and standard operating procedures to be followed. The Assembly Elections in Maharashtra would take place on October 21, and the results would be announced on October 24. The tenure of the present government expires on November 2.
