Bhopal, July 2: In a shocking case of sexual assault reported in Madhya Pradesh, a Betul man who goes by the moniker of "brother of 1000 sisters" has been booked for raping an 11-year-old girl. The accused, identified as Rajendra Singh alias Kendu Baba, has been taken into custody after he surrendered before the police.

The case came to light a couple of weeks ago, when the police department received an anonymous letter detailing the alleged rape of the minor by Singh over the last one year, said Betul Ganj police station in-charge Motilal Kushwaha. The letter provided the police with details of the victim. Based on the allegations, Kushwaha approached the minor's family with his team. The victim and her parents validated the charge as levelled in the anonymous letter.

Since the accused is an influential person and a local corporator, the girl's kin were fearful of lodging a case against him. Singh had threatened them to maintain silence, an official privy to the probe so far said.

After finding incrementing evidence against Singh, the police registered a case on Sunday night and issued orders to arrest him. Under pressure, the accused surrendered before Betul Ganj police station on Monday.

Significantly, Singh has been serving as corporator of Zakir Hussain ward in Betul for the past several years. He has been organising mass raksha bandhan events, where scores of women tie rakhi to him. The events earned him the title of "brother of 1000 sisters".
