Bhopal, January 2: A farmer has been announced punishment by the village panchayat in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur district for accidentally killing a cow. His family has also been ostracised and subjected to social boycott for the "sin" of causing the death of a bovine. Sheopur additional collector Rajendra Rai has taken cognizance of the case and initiated an inquiry.

At the village panchayat convened on Tuesday evening, sarpanch Pancham Singh Chauhan announced that the farmer, 36-year-old Pappu Prajapati, will have to donate a cow, apart from taking a dip into the Holy Ganga along with his family members to "pay for the sin" he committed. Cow Welfare Cess: From UP to Rajasthan, Here's The List of Indian States That Impose 'Gau Cess'.

The ostracisation would only end after Prajapati organise a mass feast after a ‘Kanya and Brahman Bhoj’. The cost for arranging the feast is likely to be beyond the financial capability of the farmer.

Reports said the cow was killed by Prajapati while parking his tractor-trolley. The vehicle was being reversed by the farmer, when the cow was sitting behind. Unaware, Prajapati ended up knocking down the bovine which led to his death on the spot.

Panchayat member Om Prakash Gautam said the action of Prajapati amount to "gau-hatya". His family has to get rid of the sins through penance, Gautam added.
