Madan Lal Khurana’s Demise: PM Modi, Amit Shah and Other Political Leaders Condole Former Delhi CM’s Death
Former Delhi Chief Minister and BJP leader Madan Lal Khurana died at the age of 82 on Saturday night. Khurana who was a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), became Delhi's CM in 1993.
New Delhi, October 28: Former Delhi Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Madan Lal Khurana passed away at the age of 82 on Saturday night. Khurana who was a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), became Delhi's CM in 1993. He later resigned from his post in 1996 in the wake of hawala scandal. A four-time Lok Sabha member, Khurana has also served as governor of Rajasthan State from 14 January 2004 to 1 November 2004.
Madan Lal Khurana was given the title of Dilli ka Sher (Lion of Delhi) for reviving BJP in Delhi. He was expelled from the party twice; in August 2005 when he criticised then BJP President L.K Advani and in March 2006 when is announced to attend a rally by then expelled Uma Bharti. Many political leaders expressed their condolence for the former Delhi CM:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is Japan paid tribute to Madan Lal Khurana. "Anguished by the passing away of Shri Madan Lal Khurana Ji. He worked tirelessly for the progress of Delhi, particularly towards ensuring better infrastructure. He distinguished himself as a hardworking and people-friendly administrator, both in the Delhi government and Centre," PM Modi tweeted.
BJP president while condoling the Death of Khurana said, "Learnt of the unfortunate demise of former Delhi chief minister and BJP leader Madan Lal Khurana. He will be remembered as an ideal Swayamsewak and a dedicated Vidhyarti Parishad worker and a strong pillar of the Jan Sangh and the BJP," Shah tweeted.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia condoled Khurana's death and said two days state mourning will be observed. "We all are deeply saddened to hear of the demise of veteran leader & former CM of Delhi Shri Madan Lal Khurana ji. As a mark of respect to the departed soul, state mourning shall be observed by Delhi govt for 2 days," Sisodia tweeted.
Union Minister Harsh Vardhan said, "My heartfelt condolences to the BJP parivar and the family of our beloved former Chief Minister of Delhi & veteran BJP leader Shri Madan Lal Khurana ji who passed away today after prolonged illness. My thoughts and prayers are with his near & dear ones. May his soul rest in peace," Harsh Vardhan said on Twitter.
Khurana's mortal remains will be kept at BJP Delhi Office on Sunday around 12 pm for people to paying their last respect. Kurana has served as the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism in Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government, before resigning in 1999, owing to the fallout with party leadership following a series of attacks on Christians that were blamed on Hindu groups.
