Thiruvananthapuram, July 17: In yet another incident of lynching, a 32-year-old man dies in Kollam in Kerala, days after he was beaten up by three assailants. Manik Roy was a migrant labourer from West Bengal working at a construction site in Kollam. Roy died on Sunday at a Kollam hospital. His postmortem report revealed that he died of head injuries.

On June 24, Roy was attacked by three men on a motorcycle when he was returning home after buying chicken. According to reports, the attackers stopped him while he was returning home and accused him of stealing the chicken. Roy resisted when they tried to snatch the chicken from him. They reportedly started beating him up, following which Roy started bleeding from the nose.

Roy reportedly complained to the police the next day and two of the assailants were arrested. He went for a check-up at a private hospital and was discharged the same day. On Sunday, Roy fainted at his workplace and was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead. The police said that the injuries were initially not fatal but became worse as they were left unattended.

Roy's case is yet another one in a series of lynchings having been reported from across the country, based on mere suspicion. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court asked Parliament to frame a separate law to deal with cases of lynching. The courts said, "No citizen can take law into their own hands nor become the law unto themselves. It is the duty of State to ensure maintenance of law and order so as to protect secular ethos and prevent mobocracy."
