Chandigarh, August 1: Heavy rainfall since the last few days lashed parts of Punjab, triggering flood-like situations. According to a tweet by ANI, water entered houses in Ludhiana, bringing normal life to a halt. Owing to torrential rains, streets were flooded in Ludhiana, causing inconvenience to people. In July, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted that Punjab will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall around the start of August. While several parts reel under severe water-logging and heavy rainfall, nearby areas of Punjab like Amritsar, Jalandhar, Chandigarh are still waiting for the rains. On Wednesday, the maximum temperatures dropped below normal limits across Haryana and Punjab. Chandigarh received light rain and recorded a maximum temperature of 29 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal, the meteorological department said.

In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a maximum of 28.7 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal. In its weather bulletin, the IMD said heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places in the two states on Thursday and Friday. The IMD, in its release informed that the month of July recorded above normal monsoon, bringing the overall season's rainfall deficiency to 9 per cent.
Meanwhile, in Bihar, the death toll due to floods reached 127 after flood wreaked havoc in 13 districts. The heavy downpour affected over 85 lakh people in Shivhar, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Supaul, Kishanganj, Araria, Purnia, Katihar and West Champaran districts have been affected.
