Mumbai, July 26: The Lower Parel's Delisle road overbridge (ROB) of western railways, which was shut after it was declared dangerous, will be kept open for pedestrians, according to a joint decision taken by BMC and railway officials today. The bridge was closed from Tuesday onwards after it was declared unsafe by the IIT-Bombay experts and the civic body bridges engineer who conducted the structural audit a few days ago. The inspection was carried out after the Andheri's Gokhale bridge collapsed killing one woman and severely injuring a few others. After the tragic mishap, the authorities took up the inspection of bridges at war footing level.
According to the information received, the authorities decided to open up the pedestrian pathway during the meeting, but the vehicular movement on the bridge continues to be prohibited for safety reasons. Also, to avoid bikers and four-wheelers from taking the bridge, necessary barricading will be done. Besides this, a signboard will be put, warning people to not take the dangerous bridge.
As the ROB was closed on a short notice, the people, especially the residents in the vicinity, have been facing inconvenience. A report in the DNA says, on Thursday, when officials reached to the spot to take stock of the situation, they were gheraoed by local people along with a few politicians. It was then that a heated argument broke out between them. However, the situation was handled before it got worse. As the bridge has been closed the Mumbai traffic police has provided alternate routes for smooth traffic movement.
