Mumbai, July 26: The Lower Parel's Delisle road overbridge (ROB) which has been closed from Tuesday onwards may be kept open once again for light vehicles and pedestrians. As per a news report in DNA, the bridge will be opened until the demolition work starts. However, the decision on same will be finalised only after the BMC and railway officials hold a joint meeting on Thursday. As these two authorities have been shirking the responsibility to reconstruct the bridge, the work is getting delayed further.
Delisle ROB was closed after the IIT-Bombay experts, along with BMC's bridges department, undertook a structural audit. It was then the experts found that the bridge is in a dangerous condition and needs to be reconstructed. The inspection was conducted after a part of Andheri's Gokhale bridge collapsed earlier, killing one woman and leaving a few others injured. The mishap also grabbed the attention of the authorities who received a lot of flak for their civic negligence.
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, who was also present in the city when the mishap took place, immediately ordered inspections of all railway bridges --ROB and FOB. Apart from this, a few days ago, the western railways also released an inquiry report of the Gokhale bridge collapse mishap, in which it was stated that the incident occurred due to negligence. The report also accused BMC of not taking permission before laying out utility cables, the weight of which couldn't be sustained by the utility cables.
As the Lower Parel ROB was shut on a short notice, daily commuters started facing inconvenience. Moreover, the Mumbai traffic police have given alternate traffic routes to motorist and two-wheelers as the bridge is shut for smooth traffic movement.
