Bijnor, April 7: In an unusual incident reported from Uttar Pradesh, several people were injured among supporters of Indian National Congress's Muzaffarnagar candidate Nasimuddin Siddiqui over biryani. According to officials, biryani was served at the election meeting without prior permission, prompting authorities to file a police case and arrest nine people. According to reports, the meeting was organised at the house of former MLA Maulana Jameel, who recently joined Congress, at Tadheda village on Saturday. After the meeting was over, biryani was served for lunch but clashes erupted among the party workers as the supporters scrambled for the first serving. As violence erupted, Cops were called to handle the situation.
A case has been registered against 34 persons including Jameel and his son under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and violation of the model code of conduct, a police official said. So far nine people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Maulana Jameel switched to Congress ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha Polls. Jameel joined the grand old party in the presence of Congress general secretary Jyotiraditya Scindia in Delhi. He was elected from Meerapur assembly constituency in 2012 on a BSP ticket. Meanwhile, voting in Bijnor will take place in the first phase of elections.
