Jaya Varma Sinha, Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board, said that the driver and assistant driver of the goods train and guard of the Kanchenjunga Express train died in the accident.

A major train accident occurred in West Bengal today, June 17. The Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express collided with a goods train this morning near New Jalpaiguri, a senior North Frontier Railway (NFR) official said. Speaking about the accident, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said that the Kanchenjunga Express train was hit by a goods train in the Darjeeling district. She also said that disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue operations.

Vijayendra, has announced a state-wide protest on Monday, June 17, against the recent fuel tax hike implemented by the Karnataka government. The decision, which raised petrol prices by Rs 3 per litre and diesel prices by Rs 3.5 per litre, has sparked significant backlash.

Speaking to the media, Vijayendra urged the Chief Minister to revoke the decision immediately. "We urge the Chief Minister to withdraw this decision immediately. Tomorrow, we have organised protests across the state, and we will not keep quiet until the hike is revoked," he said. Protests are planned at all district headquarters.

Vijayendra accused the Chief Minister of increasing fuel prices due to an inability to start new programmes because of the five guarantees. "After the Lok Sabha elections, they (the Congress government) have increased fuel prices. This will affect all sections of people across the state," he added.

Meanwhile, Eid al-Adha, also known as Bakrid, will be celebrated on Monday, June 17, 2024, in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, and other South Asian countries. This festival is the second-most significant in the Islamic calendar.

In another development, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju met Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday, ahead of the first session of the new Lok Sabha. The meeting, described as a courtesy call, took place at Kharge’s residence. Rijiju emphasized the importance of cooperation between the government and the opposition for the smooth functioning of Parliament.
