Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s protest march on the roads around the Morhabadi ground in Ranchi turned violent on Friday as the police lathi-charged, fired tear gas shells, and used water cannons to stop the party workers trying to march towards the chief minister Hemant Soren’s residence, leaving several from both sides injured.

Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Friday appealed for the withdrawal of Saturday's Maharashtra bandh in view of a Bombay high court ruling. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, of which NCP(SP) is a member, initially called for a statewide bandh to protest against sexual assault on two four-year-old girls in a school in Badlapur and pressure the government for swift action. However, the Bombay high court intervened on Friday and restrained all political parties and individuals from supporting or participating in the bandh.

14 bodies have been recovered so far from the site of the bus accident in Nepal, confirmed a spokesperson for the Armed Police Force. An Indian passenger bus carrying 40 people plunged into the Marsyangdi River in the Tanahun district while en route from Pokhara to Kathmandu. The Nepal Army is currently conducting search and rescue operations at the scene.

Mumbai, August 23: Amid heavy rainfall and flooding across various districts in Tripura, the state government on Thursday, August 22, said that all educational institutions will remain closed until further notice. The decision came after Chief Minister Manik Saha visited the state's flood-affected areas and was seen walking through waterlogged roads in Agartala. He also provided his boats and flood safety materials for public use and rescue work. Meanwhile, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and president of the National Conference, Dr Farooq Abdullah, announced a pre-poll alliance between Congress and the NC on Thursday.

"Alliance on all 90 Assembly seats between the two parties has been formed. Paperwork to be finalised by tonight. Congress, NC and CPI(M) are together," Dr Abdullah said. He also expressed hope of statehood returning to Jammu and Kashmir. In a major blow to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), former Bihar Cabinet minister and RJD national General Secretary Shyam Rajak resigned from the party's primary membership on August 22. Rajak submitted his resignation to RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, ending his four-year association with the party. Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik claimed that the Delhi Police revoked the security cover of female wrestlers who are set to testify in the sexual harassment case against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.  In their post on X, Vinesh and Sakshi raised concerns about the safety of the women wrestlers and alleged that Delhi Police withdrew the security of the women wrestlers who will testify against Brij Bhushan in the court.
