Mumbai, August 21: Amid the ongoing protests over RK Kar doctor's rape and murder in West Bengal's Kolkata, the Supreme Court on Tuesday, August 20, constituted a 10-member task force to formulate a national protocol for ensuring safety and facilities for doctors and medical professionals. The task force is expected to submit its interim report within three weeks and the final report within two months. The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud stated that protecting women doctors is a matter of national interest, and the principle of equality does not demand anything less.

On August 20, the government asked the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to cancel its recent advertisement for 45 lateral entry posts in central ministries following protests by opposition parties. In a letter addressed to the UPSC Chairman, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s instructions to review the process. In the latest development in the Kolkata doctor's rape and murder at RG Kar medical college and Hospital, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers are now tracking the details of the past antecedents of crime against women committed by the accused, Sanjay Roy. As per sources, officials have come across information about several instances of Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, harassing or sexually abusing women. However, it is learned that no case was launched or action was initiated against him.

In the wake of the rising number of monkeypox cases globally, AIIMS Delhi, on Tuesday, August 20, issued guidelines to handle suspected Monkeypox patients. The hospital also allocated five beds to treat patients infected with mpox in isolation.
