Donald Trump has drafted former Democratic lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard, a self-described Hindu-American, as a foil to help him prepare for the September 10 debate with Kamala Harris. The move is aimed at bringing some structure and discipline to a campaign that by most accounts has gone off the rails, mostly on account of Trump's own mercurial personality.

The former President famously disdains preparation and prefers to wing it with ad libbing what many analysts now see as hyperbolic falsehoods and pointless digressions. But he is believed to have zeroed in Gabbard because, aside from the gender angle, he thinks she eviscerated Harris during a 2019 debate when both were running for the Democratic nomination.

Indeed, the Trump campaign maintained that the former President "does not need traditional debate prep" but said he will "continue to meet with respected policy advisers and effective communicators like Tulsi Gabbard, who successfully dominated Kamala Harris on the debate stage in 2020.”
