Acting Enforcement Directorate (ED) chief Rahul Navin was on Wednesday appointed as the full-time director of the federal anti-money laundering agency. An order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) said the appointment of Navin, a 1993-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the Income Tax cadre, has been made "for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the post, or until further orders, whichever is earlier".

According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report, India has witnessed 908 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths between June and July this year. The latest Covid epidemiological update by the UN body showed that between June 24 to July 21, an average of 17,358 specimens were tested for SARS-CoV-2 every week across 85 countries.

Today, August 14, the Supreme Court refused to grant interim bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a corruption case filed by the CBI in the alleged excise policy scam. The bench of justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan issued notice to the CBI on the plea filed by Kejriwal against the Delhi High Court order upholding his arrest by the probe agency.

The Supreme Court will hear a plea today, August 14, filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking release from jail in connection with the Delhi excise policy case, in which he is under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). A bench of justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan will take up Kejriwal's two petitions, which have separately challenged the August 5 decision of the Delhi High Court affirming his arrest and denying him bail.

Mumbai, August 14: The question of who will be the next BJP president and the timing of the election to that post is still hanging fire, with both the BJP and the RSS getting into a huddle before the formal “samanvay” (coordination) meeting of Sangh Parivar affiliates to be held in Palakkad at the end of this month. On Sunday evening, a marathon meeting lasting up to five hours was held at Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s residence. The Rajasthan High Court has granted rape convict Asaram Bapu seven-day parole for medical treatment. The 85-year-old godman, who is serving a life sentence in Jodhpur Central Jail, will go to Maharashtra for treatment under police custody. Asaram Bapu was convicted by a POCSO court in Jodhpur and sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a teen girl in his ashram.

The interim government of Bangladesh on Tuesday cancelled a national holiday on August 15 that marks the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, former PM and the father of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina. The decision was approved on Tuesday at the interim government's advisory council meeting at Jamuna government guest house in Dhaka. Several parties, including Hasina's Awami League, attended the meeting. The parties backed the interim government's decision to cancel the holiday on August 15. The official order has yet to be released.
