New Delhi, November 17: The nine-phased Jammu & Kashmir panchayat elections 2018 are scheduled to begin from today. Polling was slated to begin at 7am in six districts of the Kashmir Valley, two in Ladakh and seven districts in the Jammu region. 427 candidates are in the fray for 536 Sarpanch Halqas and 5,951 candidates for 4,048 Panch wards in the first phase.

In other major news, pollution in the national capital continues to remain a challenging issue as the air quality index remained poor on Saturday morning. The PM10 particulate was measured at 219 and PM 2.5 level at 239 at Lodhi Road.

Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh has denied the role of Punjab farmers in polluting the air of Delhi. "We have westerly winds most of the year and if stubble burning was responsible for Delhi’s pollution then Chandigarh’s air should have been as polluted," he said.

In Gurugram, an IndiGo airline employee allegedly committed suicide at a guest house in Sushant Lok, yesterday. Post-mortem will be conducted today. A case has been registered and the police investigation is underway.

From the South, a state-wide bandh has been called in Kerala as state unit president of the Hindu Aikya Vedi, K P Sasikala, was detained by the police. Sasikala had come for darshan at Sabarimala temple, but was detained for defying the prohibitory orders imposed.
