Mumbai, January 11: The Union Home Ministry on Friday night announced that the provisions of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) have come into effect from January 10. The act -- promising citizenship to non-Muslim minorities coming from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh -- was passed by the Rajya Sabha on December 11 and got its assent from President Ram Nath Kovind on the very next day.
In another news, Delhi Police on Friday held a press conference in the national capital and named nine students, including JNU student union president Aishe Ghosh and two Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members as suspects for the violence in the varsity. The police held Ghosh and her three others for vandalising the server room of JNU on January 3 and 4. Also, charged her for creating hindrances for those students who want to get their registrations done. Meanwhile, around 20 people are feared dead after a bus -- carrying 46 people -- collided with a truck in Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday evening. Following this, it caught fire. Police say that the bus headed to Jaipur when it collided with a truck head-on. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed his condolences, while CM Yogi Adityanath had ordered a probe.
