Delhi, December 14: Violent protests against the amended citizenship law spread to Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal on Friday. The situation in Assam continues to remain tense. In Delhi too, cops repeatedly canned demonstrations and fired tear smoke shells outside and inside Jamia Millia Islamia to break up a march by students. In the clashes around 70 students were injured.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019, cleared by Indian Parliament, is "fundamentally discriminatory" in nature, said United Nations' Human Rights wing on Friday. Hoping that the Supreme Court will scrutinise the Citizenship Amendment Bill and review its compatibility, the UN Human Rights said that Muslims and other minority sections have not been granted protection under the newly-enacted act.

The United States and China sealed a "phase one" trade deal on Friday. The two countries will soon sign an agreement, China's Vice Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen said at a press conference. "The two countries have agreed on the text of a phase one trade and economic deal," Shouwen was quoted as saying. He added that the Trump administration has agreed to scrap tariffs on Chinese goods in phases.
