New Delhi, December 1: After months of uncertainty, the chapter of realpolitik in Maharashtra is closed for now, with the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi comfortably sealing above the majority mark during the floor test. The alliance, primarily comprising of the Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP, received 169 votes in its favour during the vote of confidence on Saturday. In other major news, India and Japan held their first 2+2 ministerial dialogue in New Delhi. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in the meeting with their counterparts, stressed on regional peace and security. A message was also sent out to neighbouring Pakistan, asking its leadership to take "resolute action" against terrorist groups operating from its soil.

In other major news, industrialist Rahul Bajaj, while speaking at an event organised in Mumbai, raised concern over the "environment of fear" in the nation. With BJP chief Amit Shah in attendance, Bajaj said India Inc is unsure whether it could freely criticise the government as it did during the UPA years.

On the international front, the anti-government protests in Iraq have resulted in the ouster of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi. His resignation came shortly after three more protesters were shot dead by the forces, bringing the total number of fatalities to 58.
