New Delhi, August 25: In the wake of the deadly deluge in Kerala, the Union Health Ministry has approved a grant of over Rs 18 crore under the National Health Mission (NHM) for disbursing to village health, sanitation and nutrition committees in the flood-ravaged state. The ministry had earlier said it is extending all support to the relief measures in the flood-battered state, where 3,757 medical relief camps have been set up.

According to a report by PTI,  people from relief camps started returning to their homes as the floodwaters began to recede. More than 10.40 lakh of them remain in 2,770 camps across the state. The torrential rains and flooding in the southern state have killed 417 people since August 8 in the second spell of the monsoon.

Union Health Minister J P Nadda had earlier said no outbreak of the communicable disease was reported from the flood-hit districts of Kerala. The initial flood damage estimate of Kerala government is Rs 20,000 crores. For this, the Central government has sanctioned Rs 6,000 crores so far. At this time, UAE, which said they can send Rs 700 crores for relief and rehabilitation but, the central government has declined this request.
