Lion Air Crash Impact: DGCA Issues Advisory to Jet Airways, SpiceJet to Take Corrective Measures For Boeing 737 Max Planes
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked Jet Airways and SpiceJet to check all their Boeing 737 Max aircraft and told the airlines to take corrective actions to resolve the issue.
New Delhi, November 8: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked Jet Airways and SpiceJet to check all their Boeing 737 Max aircraft and told the airlines to take corrective actions to resolve the issue. Boeing 737 Max model operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air crashed last month killing all 189 passengers onboard. After the crash, United States’ Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing have issued advisories regarding the model. Till now, 219 737 MAX jets have been delivered to customers globally and 4,564 orders for jets yet to be delivered.
DGCA in a statement said, “Both the documents address erroneous high Angle Of Attack sensor input and corrective action for the same as it has a potential for repeated nose-down trim commands of the horizontal stabiliser.” the regulator said in a statement. Jet Airways and SpiceJet are the two India operators which fly Boeing 737 MAX planes. Together, there are at least six such aircraft with the two carriers. “This condition, if not addressed, could cause the flight crew to have difficulty controlling the airplane, and lead to excessive nose-down attitude, significant altitude loss, and possible impact with terrain,” a DGCA official said. The aviation regulator has given three days’ time to the flight operators for making changes to airplane flight manual and procedures have to be followed by flight crew members.
Meanwhile, a Lion Air passenger jet has been involved in another accident -- just a week after a plane from the Indonesian airline crashed. In the latest incident, the jet clipped a pole as it taxied to the runway at Bengkulu airport on Sumatra island ahead of its flight to Jakarta. The plane's left wing was visibly damaged, forcing all passengers to disembark. They were flown to the capital later Wednesday evening aboard a different aircraft.
