Mumbai, March 28: The Central Railway (CR) has banned the sale of lemon juice and all syrup-based artificial juices at all its railway station in all zones in Mumbai, a day after video of unhygienic preparation of lemon juice at Kurla station went viral on social media. According to reports, a railway canteen employee was caught on camera on Monday making lemon juice in unhygienic condition at a stall on platform 7/8 at Kurla railway station on the Central Line. Borivali Becomes First Railway Station in Mumbai With Braille-Friendly Platform Indicator. 

In its circular issued on Wednesday, the Central Railway has banned sale of lemon juice and drinks, like kalakhata, that are prepared by mixing syrup in water. The CR officials clarified that there is no ban on the sale of juices extracted using a juicer, like carrot juice.  Mumbai Locals Shame: Commuters Spit Gutka on Women Waiting For Train at Borivali Station; Police Complaint Filed.

A food stall on the Kurla station was sealed by the Central Railway officials soon after on Monday for allegedly selling poor quality lemon water to customers. The lemon juice was being prepared under the unhygienic condition and was unfit for human consumption. Reports inform that the stall's licence holder has been called on Tuesday for further inquiry on the incident.

The incident came to light after a commuter shot the video and posted it on microblogging site Twitter tagging Central Railways. In the video that went viral on social media, the worker is purportedly seen using water from the tank, placed over the stall, for preparing lime juice. As soon as the incident was reported. Soon after, taking immediate cognisance of the video, senior CR visited the stall on platform number 7-8 of the Kurla railway station and decided to seal the stall. The sample of the lemon  juice was collected for bacteriological examination.

According to a report by PTI, a drive by health inspectors and officials from has been intensified to inspect hygeine and water quality of all the food stalls under the CR's Mumbai division in the wake of this incident.
