Dehradun, Sep 10: Heavy rainfall in several northern states of India have created a havoc in the past few days, bringing normal life to a standstill. In the hill state Uttarakhand, the Uttarkashi-Ghansali-Kedarnath road was shut in Tehri due to a landslide in the region. Commuters were stranded as landslides damaged roads and completely cut-off connectivity to villages. On Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places in Uttarakhand during next 48 hours. On Sunday, Dehradun recorded 3mm rainfall.

The IMD informed that a couple of weather systems are expected to lead to substantial increase in rainfall in north-eastern states while the monsoon trough is likely to shift northwards from September 11 and continue to run across north-eastern states up to September 14.

In Himachal Pradesh, the Shimla-Kalka heritage railway track was blocked after a landslide occurred in the region, resulting in traffic snarls. According to a tweet by ANI, the clearance operation is currently underway. Reports inform that heavy rains and thundershowers triggered landslides in several parts of the state in the last few days. Earlier this week, the National Highway-5 was also blocked for some time due to the landslides.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was closed on Monday after a landslide occurred in Ramban district. The traffic movement was disrupted as the clearance work is underway. Meanwhile, in Rajasthan rains continued to lash parts of the state where Pisangan in Ajmer recorded 12 cm rainfall followed by Mangrol in Baran which recorded 11 cm.

According to private weather agency Skymet Weather, the rainfall activity will continue in patches over Delhi-NCR and short spell intense showers or light rains are expected during the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, moderate rain and thundershowers with lightning strikes are likely over Odisha, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and Bihar while Sub Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland will see moderate to heavy showers.
