New Delhi, October 2: The nation on Tuesday remembered Former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary today, i.e. October 2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi, Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and several other leaders paid tribute to Former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at Vijay Ghat in Delhi on Tuesday. According to a tweet by ANIAnil Shastri, son of Former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri also paid tribute to his father at Vijay Ghat. According to reports, Lal Bahadur Shastri National Memorial Trust will organise a programme of devotional and patriotic songs by noted signer Sapna Bhatnagar on the 115th birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister.  October 2 has a great historical significance for the nation as the day marks the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on October 2, 1904 and was the second Prime Minister of India. The leader holds a prominent place in the freedom struggle if India. Under his leadership, India won the 1965 war against Pakistan. He gave the nation the powerful slogan of Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan to enthuse soldiers and farmers. Deeply impressed and influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, Shastri joined the Indian independence movement in the 1920s.

After India got independence in 1947, he joined the latter's government and became one of Prime Minister Nehru's principals, first as Railways Minister (1951–56), and then in a variety of other functions, including Home Minister.
