Lahore Court Acquits Sarabjit Singh’s 'Murderers', Orders Administration to Release Two Men
Both the suspects were Singh’s fellow inmates in the jail and allegedly killed him in 2013.
Lahore, December 16: The district and sessions court in Lahore on Saturday acquitted two prime suspects – Amir Tandba and Madasir Munir – of all charges for killing Indian national Sarabjit Singh inside the Kot Lakhpat jail in 2013.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Moin Khokar in his order directed the administration to release both the suspects, after the witnesses withdrew their statements. Singh was jailed in Pakistan and was sentenced to death for his alleged involvement in a string of bombings in 1990 in Pakistan. Though several mercy petitions were filed by Singh’s lawyers, the pleas were rejected. The last appeal filed on May 2012 along had 1,00,000 signatures collected from India.
The Ministry of External Affairs has asked the Pakistani counterpart to probe Singh’s death, while his sister Dalbir Kaur – citing planned murder – stated, “If the attack was planned by the government itself, then there is no need for an inquiry. But if Sarabjit was attacked without the knowledge of the authorities, then an inquiry is definitely needed.”
As per the reports, Singh was pronounced dead by the doctors at Lahore's Jinnah Hospital, after unconscious for five days in 2013. The death report states that there were severe head injuries due to after the attack on the jail's premises.
