Kargil, September 1: In a big win for National Conference (NC) in Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) , Kargil, it has emerged as the single largest party by winning 10 seats, while the Congress is at the second position by winning eight seats. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win only two and one seats respectively. Independents bagged five seats.
The council has 30 seats, but the election is held for 26 seats. The state government will nominate councillors for the rest four seats. These councillors will have voting rights during confidence or no-confidence motion. It is considered to be a big win for Omar Abdullah and the Congress.
According to reports, anti-incumbency factor played a significant role in the loss of the BJP and PDP as the coalition failed to initiate various infrastructure projects in the area. The Congress fielded 23 seats while NC contested on 20 seats. The BJP and the PDP contested on 14 seats and 21 seats, respectively. Meanwhile, 21 Independent candidates also tried their luck in the elections.
