MEA's Statement:

Earlier in the day, reacting to Narendra Modi government’s decision to declare Ladakh as a union territory, China said that the step was against its "territorial sovereignty" and asked India to "exercise caution" and not "complicate" the border issue. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said, “In recent days, the Indian side has unilaterally modified its domestic laws in such a way as to continue to undermine China's territorial sovereignty. This practice is unacceptable.”

India on Monday scrapped special status from Jammu and Kashmir. The state has also been divided into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Hours after Union Home Minister Amit Shah proposed the resolution to dilute Article 370, top political leaders of Jammu and Kashmir including former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were detained.
