Kolkata, August 12: Chilling details have surfaced in the gruesome rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor whose body was found half-naked in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The inquest report has revealed that the deceased was bleeding from her private parts, mouth and eyes, and had a broken neck. The Kolkata police have arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic police volunteer by profession, as the main accused in the case on August 11, after his bluetooth earphone was found at the crime scene.
The deceased, a 31 year-old second-year PGT doctor, was found dead in a semi-nude condition inside the seminar hall of the hospital on August, 9. The Kolkata police had started their investigations, scanning CCTV cameras, compiling a list of potential suspects, and evidence collection from the crime scene. "This is definitely not a case of suicide; the woman was murdered following sexual assault," a police officer told news agency PTI.
What Does Autopsy Reveal?
The autopsy indicated that the victim was sexually abused and left bleeding from both eyes and mouth. It also revealed injuries on her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, broken neck and lips. The autopsy report read as "I found a hairclip near her private part and a broken spectacle near her body", and that the victim was found semi-naked on a blue mattress, with her jeans and underwear lying on her left. What Led to Sanjay Roy’s Arrest?
The accused Sanjay Roy was seen in the CCTV camera footage wandering in the seminar hall where the body was found in the early hours on Friday. The police while questioning Roy, found that the seized bluetooth earphone automatically connected to Roy's device and on further probing, he reportedly confessed to committing the crime. Roy is reportedly a civic police volunteer and was deputed to offer support and assistance to patients during admission into the hospital. Hence, he had access to multiple floors of the hospital.
"After committing the crime, the accused went back to the place where he was staying and slept till late on Friday morning. After waking up, he washed the clothes he was wearing during the crime to destroy evidence. His shoes, with blood stains on them, were found during a search," a police officer was quoted as saying. "Now, we are trying to find out who else was with him or he had someone else with him," an official reported PTI. The case sparked massive outrage and protest from the medical community nationwide. The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association of India (FORDA) has supported the ongoing students' strike and called for a nationwide halt of elective services in hospitals.
TMC Reaction to the Case:
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has asserted that the TMC government will seek death penalty for the accused, while trying the case in a fast track court. TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee said: "A strict law should be brought for a speedy trial in 7 days. Why will they keep the accused in jail for 5-6 years and invest so much money during their trial?"
