Kolkata, July 07: A first-year student of IIT-Madras, Archan Bhattacharya, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly stabbing and grievously wounding a family friend's neighbour, his wife, and their son. The incident, reportedly in retaliation for the killing of a stray dog, occurred in the Chouhati area of Sonarpur, on the outskirts of Kolkata.
TOI reported that Bhattacharya, a resident of Sonarpur, had traveled from Chennai to avenge the dog's death. He faces charges under various sections, including attempt to murder. The injured, Gobindo Adhikari, his wife, and their son, are being treated at MR Bangur Hospital in Kolkata. The dispute began when the families of Gobindo Adhikari and Subhash Debnath, neighbors for several years, clashed over the Debnath family's practice of feeding stray dogs. The Adhikari family complained that the dogs frequently entered their house, leading to tension between the neighbours. In May, the Adhikaris allegedly beat a stray dog, which died a few days later. An officer stated, "When Smriti Debnath narrated the dog's death to her friend Archan, he came to avenge the attack and the harassment of the Debnath family." Bhattacharya admitted to being enraged upon learning about the dog's death, prompting his violent reaction, police said.
