Mumbai, October 5: A hospital in West Bengal's Kolkata was fined Rs 10,000 for reportedly denying a blanket to a patient. The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission (WBCERC) asked the hospital in Tegharia to compensate the complainant as a dengue patient was allegedly denied a blanket, which she had requested.
It must be noted that this is the first complaint in connection with dengue patients, which the commission heard amid the rising cases of dengue in the state, reports the Times of India. The commission has given its judgment during the outbreak of dengue in West Bengal. The complainant has been identified as Anand Kumar Jha, an Army jawan. Jha had admitted his wife to the Renaissance Hospital for dengue. Kolkata Shocker: Child Crushed to Death by Speeding Truck, Angry Locals Torch Vehicles in Protest (Watch Videos).
In his complaint, Jha claimed that although his wife was not very unwell, she was admitted to the ICU. He also alleged that his wife was given a bed sheet and a thin blanket; however, when she requested an additional blanket as she was shivering, she was made to wait for half an hour. Later, she was shifted to a ward.
Jha further said that when his wife asked for the blanket once again, the hospital refused to give it. When Jha tried to raise the issue during his wife's discharge, the hospital's doctor allegedly snatched his written complaint. This led to a commotion. Following this, Jha decided to bring the issue before the health panel. Kolkata Shocker: Woman Sets Herself on Fire After Lover Threatens to Post Intimate Photos and Videos Online, Dies.
"How many blankets a patient might require can depend from person to person. If an additional blanket is needed the hospital should provide," WBCERC chairman Justice (retired) Asim Kumar Banerjee said. The commission then announced its decision and ordered the hospital to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation.
