Kolkata, January 31: Panic gripped passengers at Kolkata’s Dum Dum station on Thursday when smoke was detected inside the metro. According to reports all passengers have been evacuated safely. However, the metro services between Dum Dum and Kavi Subhash stations were suspended for 20-25 minutes and were resumed at 11:15 am.  Authorities will investigate the cause of the fire.

"Smoke was seen coming out of the third compartment of a Tollygunj bound non-AC metro train when it was about to leave Dumdum station at around 10.50 a.m.," Kolkata Metro CPRO Indrani Banerjee said. "The train was stopped at the Dumdum station using emergency protocol and all the passengers were safely evacuated," she added.

In a similar incident in December last year, Metro services in Kolkata were disrupted evening after smoke was detected in a metro train from Maidan and Rabindra Sadan station. According to reports, the fire broke out when the train was passing through the underground tunnel. In Panic passengers even tried to break windows of the train. Similarly in April last year, panic engulfed commuters of Kolkata Metro when power-tripped on a Kavi Subhas-bound train. It was Poila Baishakh or Bengali New Year, and trains were packed as people were returning home. The train suddenly stopped while entering the station. Passengers smashed window panes as they attempted to run out of the dark tunnel.
