Kolkata Man Sells Newborn Twin Daughters for Rs 1.8 Lakh, Arrested

A garment seller was arrested on Sunday by the Barasat Police for allegedly selling off one of his twin daughters.

Kolkata, October 30: A garment seller was arrested on Sunday by Police for allegedly selling off one of his twin daughters. Reports inform that the man tried to sell his daughter to rice-trader for Rs 1 Lakh and his other daughter to a childless couple for Rs 80,000 in October. The man has been identified as Ratan Brahma, a resident of West Bengal's Gaighata area.

During interrogation, Brahma revealed that he already had a 10-year-old daughter and wouldn't have been able to feed two more and hence, he tried to sell the infants. As per the report, the police rescued one of the infants from the rice trader's resident at Thakurnagae area and the second child was recovered from childless couple's home in Ramchandrapur village. Mumbai: Family in Virar Sells Daughters-in-Law for Rs 1.5 Lakh After They Refuse to Pay Dowry.

According to details by Police, the twin infants have been kept at a Chandpara health centre and would be produced before the court on Monday, a report by PTI informed. Brahma has been booked under the sections of the Juvenile Justice Act 2015 and will be produced before the Child Welfare Committee. Police are also interrogating two families who brought infants.
