Kolkata, August 2: A city court on Thursday sentenced a 32-year-old man lifetime imprisonment for raping a 17-year-old girl, within file days of filing the FIR. This is considered to be one of the fastest convictions under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. Man Kills Father After Fight Over Bottle of Premium Whiskey.
The FIR was filed on July 24 and within a couple of days, a charge sheet was issued. According to a Times of India report, the Court has directed the accused Biswajit Dey to pay a fine of Rs 2 lakh, out of which 90 percent will go to the survivor. The girl met the accused through a social networking site during Durga Puja last year.
He promised to marry her and even forced herself on her at a factory premise in January this year. The physical relationship continued for a while, and then last week she fell ill and was admitted to the hospital. It was found that she was pregnant. The mother of the survivor tried to locate Dey, but he was already absconding. So the mother went and filed an FIR at Ultadanga Police Station.
While the defence argued that Dey didn't commit rape, Public Prosecutor for POCSO cases contended that any sexual relationship with a minor is a crime. Dey's plea was leniency in judgement was also turned down to set an example to people committing the heinous crime.
