At least one person has died in the Majherhat bridge collapse in south Kolkata, while many more are feared trapped under the rubble. 20-25 injured people have been rescued by fire officials. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, now on a trip to Darjeeling in North Bengal, expressed concern over the incident and said her government will initiate a probe into the collapse.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed Majerhat bridge collapse in Kolkata as an unfortunate incident. "The collapse of a part of a bridge in Kolkata is deeply unfortunate. My thoughts are with the families of the victims. I pray that those who are injured recover at the earliest," PM Modi tweeted.

Following Majerhat bridge collapse, West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim said no casualty was reported so far in the incident. "It was a 40-year-old bridge. As of now there has been no casualty, but search operations are underway, let us wait," Hakim said. "All those who were trapped have been rescued. Six people have been admitted to hospital," he added.

Kolkata, September 4: In a tragic incident, a portion of Majerhat bridge in Kolkata has collapsed. Five people have been reported dead and many more are feared trapped underneath in the collapse.

Authorities have rushed to the spot. Rescue operations are underway. According to reports, locals are helping in evacuating people buried under the debris. West Bengal is reeling under heavy rains.  More than 100 people have died so far in the rain-related incidents this year.

In August this year, An under-construction flyover that is a part of the East-West Corridor connecting Porbandar in Gujarat and Silchar in Assam collapsed at Phansidewa.
