Kolkata, October 3: Fire broke out in the pharmacy department of Kolkata Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday morning. According to a tweet by ANI, 10 fire engines were pressed into service. Also, the Kolkata police was immediately rushed to the spot. Reports inform that all the patients of the hospital are safe. The cause of the fire is not known yet. No casualties have been reported so far. The firefighting operation are currently underway at the hospital. More details awaited.

According to reports, the blaze was reported at around 8 AM on Wednesday. As soon as the incident was reported, police rushed to the spot to take the stock of the situation. At least 250 people have been evacuated and they are being shifted to different blocks.

Reports inform that the smoke engulfed the building and the patients reportedly jumped out of the windows to save their lives. The Kolkata Medical College, often referred to as Calcutta Medical College which was established in 1948, is one of the oldest hospitals in the city.

Earlier in September, a massive fire that broke out at Bagree Market in Burrabazar area of the city. The fire gutted at least 1,000 business establishments inside the G+5 building, causing huge losses to traders ahead of Durga Puja. Reports inform that nearly thirty fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire at the over 60-year-old building. The fire was brought under control after two days, a senior officer of the fire department informed.
