Kolkata, August 19: The postmortem report of the postgraduate trainee doctor found raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has revealed extensive injuries inflicted before death, indicating a brutal assault. The victim's colleagues have disclosed significant details, suggesting the crime might not be straightforward. They believe the victim, who was under immense work pressure with shifts extending up to 36 hours, could have been specifically targeted. Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Victim's Autopsy Report Findings
The autopsy findings revealed over 14 injuries on the victim’s head, face, neck, arms, and genitals. The cause of death was determined to be “manual strangulation associated with smothering,” and the manner of death was ruled as homicide. The report indicated possible sexual assault, with evidence of forceful penetration and the presence of a “white, thick, viscid liquid” in the victim’s genitalia. Additionally, haemorrhaging in the lungs and blood clots in the body were noted, although there were no signs of fractures. Samples of blood and other bodily fluids have been sent for further analysis.
The trainee doctor was found dead in a hospital seminar room on August 9. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested the following day in connection with the crime. The Calcutta High Court has since transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The incident has sparked widespread outrage, leading to strikes and protests by medical professionals across West Bengal and other parts of India. Amid the public outcry, Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, resigned and has been questioned by the CBI.
In response, the West Bengal government has announced several measures to enhance women's workplace safety, particularly in state-run hospitals. These measures include establishing designated retiring rooms and CCTV-monitored 'safe zones' for women, especially those working night shifts. The Supreme Court has also taken up the matter and is scheduled to hear it on August 20.
