Kishtwar, July 1: In a tragic accident in Chenab Valley of Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar which killed thirty-five people and injured seventeen, a three-year-old girl lost all members of her family. The incident took place when a matador vehicle coming from Keshwan to Kishtwar fell into a gorge. Babar Ali, minor's relative said, "her father, mother and two brothers have died in the incident, she is the only survivor." "Thirty-five people have died. Three injured were airlifted to Jammu. Another helicopter flew to Kishtwar to airlift more injured," Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner, Angrez Singh Rana, was quoted as saying by ANI. Calling the incident as heart-wrenching, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "The accident in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar is heart-wrenching. We mourn all those who lost their lives and express condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest."

Governor Satyapal Malik also expressed his grief over the accident and announced Rs five lakh each to the families of those killed. Governor Malik, in the press statement, said: "All the reasons for such incidents will be probed thoroughly and strong decisions will be taken in the next SAC meeting to ensure strict action against those responsible for such avoidable incidents". He also directed the Transport department to pull out untrained drivers and unfit vehicles off-road.

Over-speeding, overloading and bad roads have led to deadly accidents in the hills of Rajouri, Doda, Kishtwar and Pooch in past as well. Earlier on June 27, 11 students of private institute died after their bus fell into a gorge in Pir Ki Gali area of Mughal Road.
