KIIT University Violence: Over 40 Injured Following the Law & Engineering Students Clash; SRPF Deployed at the Campus
The uproar had started when a second-year-BTech Mechanical Engineering student allegedly harassed and teased a final year female law student on the evening of November 23.
Tension smeared between the law students and engineering students at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (IIT) reportedly, leaving over 40 students were hospitalised, and at least one admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with a severe head injury. The delayed response of police officials has only made the situation worse. Reportedly, the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) has been deployed at the Bhuvaneshwar campus. After the incident, the law student and her batchmates protested at the BTech hostel and demanded an apology. According to the students account shared on social media, the accused apologised by the end of the day. But the matter did not end there. The next day, hundreds of engineering students entered the Law School with beer bottles, sticks, bats, stones and even knives to damage the premise and harm the students. The civilian activist platform, Arguendo reported that the incident continued for an hour and the engineering students also entered to one of the students were unaware law students were brutally assaulted. The violence broke out into a full-fledged riot spreading panic to the locals. Students reported that name of the molester because of whom the whole incident started is Rakesh Rathore. The accounts shared on social media also revealed the authority’s lack of control over the situation. By the time, police arrived, many students were already injured. Section 144 has been imposed on the university campus.
