Kolkata, October 2: A woman in her mid-forties has been arrested for alleged involvement in an interstate kidney smuggling racket. Before joining the racket she had sold her own kidney, the police said on Monday. Chandana Guria- a nurse who worked for several nursing homes at Howrah, was arrested by the Uttarakhand Police from her rented home at Jagacha area. She was allegedly part of the kidney smuggling racket that was busted by Uttarakhand police in the year 2017. So far police have arrested thirteen accused including Chandana. “During interrogation, it was found that before joining this racket, she had sold her own kidney,” senior superintendent of police, Dehradun, Nivedita Kukreti said. While adding the officer said that more information will be collected after she reaches Dehradun and undergoes interrogation.
The Uttrakhand police were after her ever since her name was mentioned by one of the arrested accused. Chandana and a Kolkata-based doctor used to run a clinic for Kidney ailments. The doctor while treating people used to suggest kidney transplant and then offer them to go to the nursing home in Dehradun and Haridwar.
The whole racket has removed kidneys of about 70 people which they used to sell in the black market for Rs 40-45 lakh each. Sources said that police are trying to ascertain whether there are more people involved in the smuggling racket.
