Khaisi, Jaintia Autonomous District Council Elections 2019: Results to be Released by Meghalaya Officials Tomorrow, Dry Day Declared

Shillong, March 1: The Meghalaya State Election Commission (SEC) is expected to declare the final results of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) polls by tomorrow noon, reports said. In view of the electoral process, the administration had clamped down on the sale and distribution of liquor from February 27 to March 2.

Notably, the voting for the two autonomous district council was held on February 27 using ballot papers. Hundreds of nominations were filed, to participate in the polls, by February 8.

Ahead of the polls, a notification was issued to increase the deposit amount per candidature to Rs 3,000. An amendment was also moved to allow each candidate to spend upto Rs 5 lakh per constituency. For the first time, the option of NOTA (None of the Above) was also introduced in the polls.

The municipal elections also comes amid the ongoing protests in the Northeast, in response to the Bill introduced before the Parliament by the Centre which would grant citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants, who entered India before December 2014.
