Shillong, March 2: Congress has won the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) by securing 10 seats in the recent district council elections on Saturday, while lost the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC). However, NPP and UDP emerged as largest parties securing 11 seats each in the JHADC polls. Around 131 candidates are in the fray for the 29 seats each in KHADC and JHADC.
Earlier, Congress secured its seventh seat in the KHADC after party candidate Charles Marngar secured victory in Mawhati. Also, in Nongpoh, INC candidate Balajied Ranee defeated UDP’s Rona Khymdeit. Furthermore, Congress candidates Holando Lamin wins War Central constituency, Gabriel Wahlang from Nongstoin and Bajop Pyngrope wins Rambrai seats respectively. Joseph Lakadong won in Laitumkhrah-Malki, and Ronnie V Lyngdoh secured victory in Mylliem constituency. Meanwhile, in JHADC, NPP candidate Het Pohthmi wins War West constituency. In War East, NPP’s Gillroy Tariang defeated the former JHADC CEM and UDP candidate, Lamdibok Sumer by securing a total of 3320 votes. Also, HSPDP's Sherborlang Mawlong emerged victorious in Nongspung-Sohiong constituency and former MLA, and UDP’s Paul Lyngdoh won Jaiaw constituency.
Other parties too emerged victorious in the ongoing calculation of votes. NPP leader Pynshngain N Syiem defeated his closest competitor, PDF's James Ban Basaiawmoit by 240 votes in Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah constituency. USP’s Ryngkatlang Lyndem wins Lyngkyrdem-Laitkroh constituency and PDF’s Macdalyn Sawkmie Mawlong wins from Umsning. HSPDP secured its second win in Mawkynrew after Martle Mukhim defeated PDF's Amanda A Pakyntein by 1245 votes. In Umroi, NPP's Rangkynsai Kharbuki defeated INC’s Micky Syiem by 161 votes.
As the counting of votes by the Meghalaya State Election Commission (SEC) still in place for KHADC and JHADC, more details are about to follow. In view of the electoral process, the administration had clamped down on the sale and distribution of liquor from February 27 to March 2.
