Trichy, September 27: The cases of dog attacks are rising across the country. Amid this, a two-year-old boy in Kerala’s Palakkad district was severely injured after a stray dog attacked him. The dog bit off a portion of the boy's right ear. The incident occurred in Anakkara, Thrithala, on Tuesday. The child was sitting with his parents in front of their house around 7:30 pm when the stray dog launched an attack on him. He was immediately taken to the Government Medical College in Thrissur district.

As per the media reports, the boy was identified as Sabahudeen, son of Thurakkal Muhammed Moulavi, staying near Kumbidi KC Mosque. The family members quickly chased the dog away. However, by then, the dog had bitten off the portion of the boy's ear. The toddler underwent surgery at the hospital, where his condition is said to be stable. The cases of dog attacks have increased significantly in Kerala. According to recent data, as many as 1,37,137 individuals approached hospitals across the state for dog bite treatment in the first five months of 2023. Every month, at least 25,000 persons approach hospitals in the state, the data shows. According to the Animal Welfare Department, there are 289,986 stray dogs in the state of Kerala. In Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram alone, there are 100,000 dogs. However, only 18,852 of them have been sterilised. The data also shows that both these districts have witnessed the maximum number of dog bite cases.
