Frankfurt, September 2: A controversy erupted during the Indian food festival organised by the Consulate General of India (CGI) on August 31, after a Malayali organisation Kerala Samajam Frankfurt (KSF) was asked to remove beef from their menu. The organisation removed the dish from the menu on the request of CGI. The members of KSF also staged a silent protest. Cultural societies from different Indian states participated in the event to serve famous delicacies from their region. During the event, KSF served a delicacy in Kerala - beef curry and parotta. However, some right-wing Hindu organisations protested against serving the beef dish on the menu. The Hindu groups termed it as an attack on the Indian culture. According to a report published in India Today, the Hindu groups also started an online petition on change.org titled, "Save culture of cow protection in Indian NRI circles and festivities". Later, It was deleted.
The KSF shared a statement regarding the incident on their official Facebook page. The organisation stated that the complied to CGI’s request to maintain peace at the event. The KSF said, “When some people with vested interests raised objection and threatened to make ruckus during the event, CGI Frankfurt kindly requested us to revise our menu so that the event could be held without any incidents." KSF's Statement:
The KSF further added, "As per CGI Frankfurt request, we as a responsible cultural organisation - representing the peace loving “GODS OWN COUNTRY” decided to comply to maintain peace and harmony.” Members of the Malayali organisation also staged a silent protest against the groups who forced them to remove beef from the menu. Members of the group held card which read “unity in diversity” and “we decide what we eat”. The images of this silent protest are being shared on social media.
