Malappuram, October 1: A tragic accident in Kerala’s Malappuram district claimed the life of a two-year-old girl named Ifa, who died from suffocation following a car crash on Friday, September 27. The incident occurred in the Kottakkal-Padaparambu area when the family's car collided with a tanker lorry, causing the airbags to deploy. Ifa, who was seated on her mother's lap in the front seat, was tragically suffocated as the airbag pressed against her face. The seat belt also became entangled around her neck, further worsening the situation.
According to reports from the Hindustan Times, the family was travelling in their car when the unfortunate collision occurred. Ifa was travelling with her parents, Nazir and Ramsheena, along with two other passengers in the vehicle, suffered minor injuries, but the incident had devastating consequences for the young girl. The airbag deployed upon impact was a common safety feature in modern vehicles, but in this case, it became a tragic hazard due to Ifa's positioning in her mother's lap. News18 reported that police from the Kolathur station have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities are examining factors such as speed, driver behaviour, and the safety measures employed by the family during their journey. As per the reports, the accident was sudden, with the tanker lorry colliding forcefully with the family's car, highlighting the unpredictability of road safety. Additionally, the Hindustan Times reported the rising toll of road accidents in India, with alarming statistics showing that 19 individuals lose their lives in road accidents every hour.
