Kerala Rains: Schools in Kochi to Remain Closed Today After Heavy Rainfall Batters City, IMD Issues Orange Alert; Watch Video

Kochi, October 21: Heavy rainfall lashed parts of Kerala over the weekend crippling normal life in the state. In the wake of the incessant rains, all schools in Kochi will remain closed on Monday. On Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had said that heavy rains are likely to lash several parts of Kerala in the next five days as the North East monsoon became active over the state. An orange alert has already been issued for the next two days. The Orange (be prepared) alert has been issued for two days (October 20 and 21) in 13 districts across the state including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode & Wayanad. Heavy Rainfall Hits Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka as Northeast Monsoon Begins.
The IMD informed that while Perinthalamanna in Malappuram district recorded 12 cm rains, Kodungallur in Thrissur 9 cm and Aluva in Ernakulam received 7 cm of rainfall. The fishermen have been warned not to put out to sea as squally weather with wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph is likely to prevail over Kerala coast.

In its weather bulletin on Monday, the IMD said that a low pressure area over eastcentral Arabian Sea which is very likely to become Well Marked Low Pressure Area during next 24 hours and is likely to intensify into Depression during subsequent 24 hours. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and Kerala. Torrential rains are also likely at isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Karnataka and Lakshadweep.
On October 16, the IMD said that southwest monsoon had withdrawn completely from the entire country and simultaneously northeast monsoon rains commenced over Tamil Nadu and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalseema, South Karnataka and Kerala, bringing heavy rainfall in the southern states.
