Thiruvananthapuram, July 18: Heavy rainfall and severe floods for the past one week have brought normal life to a halt in Kerala. Nearly 34,000 people have been shifted to relief camps after heavy rains triggered flood-like situations in several areas across the state. The District Administration on Wednesday declared one day holiday in all schools, including private schools, till Class 12 in Ernakulam district due to continuous heavy rainfall in the region.
According to Kerala Railway PRO, 10 trains have been fully cancelled for today in Kottayam-Ettumanur section and two trains have been partially cancelled between Ernakulam to Punalur due to incessant rain and high river water level beneath rail bridges. Many parts of Kottayam and Alappuzha districts were still under flood water.

Earlier this week, schools and colleges remained shut in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathnamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. Kerala University has postponed all its examinations scheduled for this week to July 21. Road traffic continued to be hit in some parts of the state due to water-logging. Reports inform that heavy rains are expected to continue till July 19.
According to a PTI report, a total of 34,693 people from 8,033 families were shifted to 265 relief camps he across the state, the control room monitoring rain-related incidents said. Meanwhile, at least 12 people have died and six reported missing in rain-related incidents after the monsoon gained momentum in Kerala.
