Kerala Rains: Death Toll Rises to 60, IMD Issues Red Alert For 8 Districts
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed that as many as 60 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the southern state. The deaths have been reported from Wayanad, while Malappuram, Palakkad, Idukki, Kozhikode were other worse-hit districts.
Kochi, August 11: Flood situation in Kerala continued to remain grim in several districts, with the death toll rising to 60 on Sunday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed. The deaths have been reported worst-affected districts like Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Idukki, Kozhikode among others. According to official figures, the rain-related deaths in Kerala between August 8 and 11 is 60, while over 1,65,519 people have been evacuated to 1,318 relief camps. In its weather bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Sunday several districts of Kerala including Kasargode, Kannur and Wayanad. The Kerala floods death toll has reached 55 and over 1.5 lakh people shifted to around 1,300 camps across the rain-battered state, the Meteorological Department has predicted more rains in the coming days. On Saturday, the Chief Minister took stock of the situation and said despite incessant rains, water level had increased only three dams and continued to be low in Idukki and Pathanamthitta. Giving details of the current situation in the state, the Chief Minister informed that as many as 80 landslides had been reported from eight worst-hit districts. As rains continue to batter the southern state, rescue operation teams have been pressed into service. The India Meteorological Dept (IMD) has issued a red alert for eight districts including Ernakulam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Kasargod.
