Kerala Heavy Rains Alert: Government Opens Four Shutters Of Malampuzha Dam In Palakkad
In the wake of the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) prediction of heavy rainfall in Kerala in the first week of October, four shutters of Malampuzha dam in Palakkad have been opened today by 9 cm each.
Thiruvananthapuram, October 4: In the wake of the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) prediction of heavy rainfall in Kerala in the first week of October, four shutters of Malampuzha dam in Palakkad have been opened today by 9 cm each. Yesterday, the state government issued a red alert in three districts. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the government had taken stock of the situation. He also sought help from the central government.
The IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Idukki, Palakkad and Thrissur district on October 7. While some parts of the state likely to receive heavy rains on October 5. Due to the red alert district authorities have been asked to be ready for the extreme situation as landslides are also expected. The chief minister also asked to avoid travel at night, especially in the hilly areas.
According to the IMD, Idukki is expected to receive maximum rains with 7-11 cms of rainfall in the first week of October, whereas Wayanad is also likely to receive heavy rainfall till October 6. In Kannur, heavy showers are expected on 6 October, whereas heavy rainfall is expected in Kozhikode on 5 and 6 October.
In August heavy rains had lashed Kerala. Around 400 people lost their lives due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rains. The Centre had declared it as ‘the calamity of severe nature’ and issued a financial aid of Rs 500 crore to the state. The Indian Defence Forces had also launched rescue and relief operation ‘Madad’ to evacuate people to safe locations.
