Kerala Floods: Supreme Court Orders National Relief Management Committee to Submit Report on Friday

New Delhi, August 16: The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the National Relief Management Committee to submit its report on the Kerala floods by 2 PM on Friday. The deadly floods have claimed more than 80 lives and displaced thousands. More than 30,000 have been evacuated and a red alert has been declared in all the districts of the state.

The Supreme Court has also asked the high power committee to convene a meeting by Friday morning in connection with the rising water level in Mullaperiyar Dam in Kerala.

Rescue operations were held by Coast Guard helicopters over Ernakulam, earlier on Thursday. 132 people have been rescued from Thrissur, Aluva and Perumbavoor by Coast Guard helicopters. Watch the video of the rescue operation in the video below:

45 persons stranded due to incessant rains were rescued from Machilipatnam by three teams of Indian Navy deployed at Perumbavoor, on Thursday.

"We have deployed teams in 7 districts. 14 teams are already there and today we are sending another 12 teams & if required more teams will be sent. We are working for rescue, evacuation and relief in coordination with the state authorities (sic)," said Sanjay Kumar, DG NDRF.

12 more teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), six from Delhi and six from Gandhinagar are being airlifted to Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. 18 teams are already deployed in the state, said an ANI report.

The Kochi airport will remain shut till August 26 and the Southern Railways and Kochi Metro have suspended operations in wake of the floods and rising water levels. The Kerala government has opened 35 dams to release water. The Mullaperiyar Dam, bordering Tamil Nadu, is overflowing but the Tamil Nadu government has agreed to draw water from the reservoir in order to help Kerala.
